PUZZLE25

About Me

I am an independent software developer based out of Calgary, Alberta. I spent years writing puzzles for the MENSA Canada newsletter, and eventually decided to try my hand at making an online puzzle game for a wider audience to enjoy.

With Puzzle25, I really wanted to distill the core gameplay loop from games like Myst, Riven, Amerzone, and Lorelei and the Lazer Eyes. Switching between idiosyncratic writings and cryptic clues in-game in order to distill the solutions to complicated puzzles, while an overarching mystery comes into focus over time. I also wanted to pull from the Tim Tang Test and NotPron, where puzzles are meant to be stared at and visited multiple times, and the user is encouraged to think outside the box and build on real-world knowledge in order to solve puzzles rather than having the game hand you all necessary clues (Although the journal provides a lot of context for Puzzle25 and tries to minimize the amount of obscure knowledge required).

I also enjoyed the idea of putting a limiting constraint on the player in the form of the keypad, which would push me to stretch more time-tested puzzles in new directions. Many puzzles have two parts, where the player must actually solve the puzzle and then figure out how to translate that solution into the 25 button keypad. It was fun to link my background in software and mathmatics

If Puzzle25 is successful at all, I plan to extend it into a more 2D/3D space, with click-based exploration akin to Myst. There's also a natural extension to Puzzle26 (Letters of the alphabet) and Puzzle27 (cubes in a rubix cube) if there's interest.
